Bishop Auckland 2star Feb 15


February 1st saw the 5th Bishop Auckland Bribar 2star take place with a record entry the event saw players down from Scotland and up from Grantham.

The Cadets saw both the 1st and 2nd seeds, Nick Keast and Josh Wetherby, taken out at the semi-finals by the 3rd and 4th seeds Joe Cope and Tong Wah Chan respectively. The final saw 3rd seed Joe Cope coming out on top in a pulsating 5 set match. Luca Pontone, Jack Jacomb, Peter Smallcomb and, in his first national event, Lee Tinkler all reached the last 16. The plate event saw Conor Elston reach the quarter finals and Max Duffin beating club mate Sam Hume in the final.

Joe Cope continued his form to also reach the final of the under 13’s, where once again he met Josh Wetherby, Josh making up for the morning semi-final defeat to Chan, came out on top with a 3-1 victory. Leo Pontone and Peter Smallcombe both reached the quarter finals

Not to be out done Josh’s Sister, Charlotte took home the Cadet girls title who, throughout the event never dropped an end. In the final she beat Alex Robinson from Cliffedale Chandlers in Grantham.

The Cadet Girls plate title taken home by Cleveland player Lilly Williams from Swerve beating Abbie Maddison in the final with Abbie also coming runner up in the Junior Girls plate losing to another swerve player Madeline Dunn with Emma Smith reaching the quarter finals of the girls’ plate

Keeping the family run going was Ruby Chan, Going one further than her older brother and winning two titles. The under 11 girls, with Cumbria’s Rebecca Rigg in 2nd and Bishops Anya Milne 3rd. Ruby also won the under 13’s title beating Charlotte Weatherby over 5 ends. With Erin Greensmith taking the plate event beating Lilly Williams in her second final of the day.

Luke Nimmo from Grimsby took home the under 11 boys title beating Thomas Rayner in the final with Bishop’s Leo Pontone and Cleveland’s Adam Lambert the losing semi-finalists. The plate final saw best friends and Bishop Club mates Luke Mitchell and Joe Sparke play off with Luke winning 3-0.

Another brother who refused to let the younger sibling take the headlines was Jack “the fonz” Cope, who made his way to the final only dropping one set on route to Tom Whittaker in the quarters. 5th seed Zak Hutchinson and Carl Draper also reached the quarter finals. Zak Defeating Sam Hume in the last 16 and Max Duffin also losing at the same stage. Rob Renton knocked Carl out to reach the Semi Final before losing to Cope.  

Nick Keast justified his top seeded position by also reaching the final without dropping a set until the final. The final was a classic attack vs defence with the match swinging one way then the other, with Jack Cope coming out on top in the 5th

The Junior Plate event  saw Dan Colinson and Harry Atkinson reach the last 16 with all 4 of the semi-finalists being Bishop players with Conor Elston and Matt Oldfield losing out and Joe Hume and Jack Jacomb going on to contest the final with Joe Hume coming out winner in 4 ends.

The Junior Girls Title was taken home by Erin Harrison. The group went to a 3way count back with Erin losing to Georgina Peart and Georgina losing to Madeline Dunn. Erin had the better sets ratio and took the title
