Great start to the new year for table tennis club
Bishop Auckland Table tennis club members made a great start to the New Year. A squad of 6 players took the trip to Blackpool hoping to continue the form they showed just before Christmas.
The under 15s saw 12 year old Luca Pontone reach the quarter finals in the plate event, with Conor Elston reaching the last 16. Peter Smallcombe reached the last 16 of the main event before just going down in the 5th to highly ranked Harry Watson.
The under 13s saw both Luca Pontone and Peter Smallcombe reach the later stages of the main event. Luca reaching the quarter finals and Peter going one further reaching the Semis before losing to Scottish international Danny Bajwa in 4 games.
The older squad of Zak Hutchinson, Tom Whittaker and Carl Draper were the last players up. Carl Draper, after a slow start and a 5 set loss, put that behind him to score a fantastic win over the number 1 seed for the event. A stuttering Tom Whittaker made it through his group as runner up just losing to the 5th seed in his group. Zak with the toughest group had 2 narrow losses and a win to put him into the plate event. Both Carl and Tom reaching the last 16 before going down. Zak unhappy with himself at not being in the main event found another gear and flew through to the final of the plate event only dropping 2 sets on route before winning the final 3 games to one with a super display of attacking table tennis.
