With most people thinking about turkey and Christmas gifts, 10 players from Bishop Auckland TTC took part in the Blackpool 2 star on the 17th of December.
The day started with Ben Mold in the under 11’s in a tough group. Ben overcame a player just below him on the raking list in a great 5 set match, which were the only sets he dropped until the final. The final saw Ben’s opponent, and second seed, come out on top this time.
The Cadet Boys saw Adam Hanby top his group with a great win over England number 58 cadet, which put Adam directly into the quarter finals. His quarter final saw him continue this form, beating number 89 to reach the Semi, where Top Seed David Gofton was too strong. Luke Mitchell and Jake Haygarth - for the 3rd tournament running - were in the same group. With both players ending up in the plate event, along with Hayden Gilmour and Jack Lomax, in Jack’s first event outside Bishop Auckland.
The plate event saw all 4 of the boys reach the Quarter finals with Jack going down in 4. The Semis saw Jake and Hayden face off, Which saw Hayden get the unexpeded ranking win and come out on top, in a tight 5-end match to reach the final vs Luke, who had won in 3 in his semi-final. The final was another long 5 set match, with Luke as victor.
Anya Milne, the only female in the squad, saw a tough group in the Cadet Girls, and was 2-0 down to the England number 22 before some aggressive play saw her come back to win. The quarters finals saw the England number 3 next in her path, A patient and counter hitting game saw a fantastic 3-2 win to reach the semis where the number 9 was too strong.
The Afternoon saw the older players join in. Lee Tinkler was seeded 4th and duly made it to the semi-finals, before going down to top seeded Wardell. Jack Jacomb, who had topped group 5, beat teammate Sam – still playing his way back to form after a break - in the first round of the knock-outs, before losing to the 3rd seed in the Quarter finals.
Adam Hanby who had ‘The Group of Death’, was seeded 4th in his group but finished 3rd, having scored a great win over the England number 54. Hayden and Jack Lomax also ended up in the plate event. Jack going down in the last 16, Hayden won his last 16 matches to set up a quarter final vs Adam. In the tightest of 3 set matches, Adam came out on top winning 17-15, 17-15 11-7. Adam’s Semi saw him again beat number 89, setting up a final which repeated the earlier group against number 54. Yet again Adam came out on top in a 5-set match which saw Adam come back from 10-8 down to win 12-10, to take the title.
The under 13’s saw Jake and Luke avoid each other, 3rd Seeded Jake won his group before a disappointing loss in the Quarter finals, Luke Mitchell was runner up in his group and won his quarter finals to set up a semi with top seed Ellis who was too good for Luke.
